Cliches, Part 3
As promised, Steven’s annual holiday party! More of the reptile store/bakery AU, Sluff with just a hint of Izzal, lots of fluff and drunken shenanigans.
(Cliches part one, two, check out my masterlist for more!)
🎄🌟🎄🌟🎄🌟🎄
11:30AM, The Friday Before Christmas:
There was always a lull in customers between the breakfast and lunch rushes, but instead of taking a well-deserved break, Duff was used to finding ways to keep himself busy, starting by wiping down the few tables he managed to fit inside his tiny store. Damp rag in hand, he paused at one of the tables to check on the napkin dispenser and of course it was that moment, bent over to reach the dispenser by the wall, his ass in the air and his back to the door, when the bell over the entrance jingled. He spun around at the sound, whacking a table leg with his shin, and instinctively braced himself against the chair behind him when he saw Slash standing in the doorway.
Slash had… a presence, you could say, an aura about him that always seemed to hit Duff like a freight train. It must be the hair and the bulky black leathers, Duff decided, making Slash seem bigger than he really is and absorbing all the light in a room so that Duff’s eyes were always drawn straight to him. Sunglasses hid his eyes (did he really need them just to cross the street to Duff’s bakery?) and his lips were pressed together, but they softened into a tiny smile when he looked at Duff.
“Slash! Hi!” Duff squeaked, then cleared his throat and hoped he wasn't visibly blushing as he scrambled back to safety behind the cash register. Slash followed right behind him, stopping in front of the register with his fingers resting on the edge of the counter. Duff couldn’t stand watching his own reflection in Slash’s glasses, so his eyes wandered as he continued.
“Uh, what can I do for you?” he stammered, staring down at Slash’s silver rings.
“Mm, I just thought I’d drop by and check that you're still planning to come to Steven's Christmas party tonight."
“Oh! Yeah, of course. I am. Uh, I’m looking forward to it."
“Good.” Slash shuffled his feet, a gesture that would have seemed more nervous if not for the pleased little smirk on his lips. “I’ll see you there, then.” Slash took a step back as if to leave, then paused and leaned back in.
“Duff?” The baker froze in mortification when Slash pointed a finger up at the red and green elf hat that Duff completely forgot he was wearing. “Bring that."
*****
6:00PM, Steven Should Really Be Decorating The Bar Right Now:
“Nah, I’m not going to go as hard this year."
Steven snorted in disbelief.
“Yeah right, Slash. Like how last year you said you were gonna take it easy but you ended up jumping off the roof? Or the year before, when you had a flight to catch the next morning but you still challenged Axl to a drinking contest, and then as soon as you beat him you turned around and challenged Izzy?"
Slash grimaced. Steven always tended bar for the first couple hours of the party and was therefore the last one to get drunk, which meant that he had dirt on everybody. Slash resisted the urge to argue that the roof was only seven feet high, and he’d landed on his feet without even spraining anything – it was nothing Steven hadn’t heard before.
“No, seriously…” Slash lowered his voice a little and leaned across the bar, even though absolutely nobody was listening in on their conversation. “…I really don’t want to embarrass myself in front of Duff. It’s his first party with us, you know? He hasn’t seen me drunk off my ass yet and I don’t want to, well, scare him off."
Steven nodded sympathetically, but mentally he was weighing the odds. It was true that Duff was a timid sort, and Steven knew all about Slash’s massive crush on his neighbor. But he also knew that Slash had been going steady with Jack Daniels for way longer than he’s been hung up on Duff. Could Slash make it through a holiday party without getting wasted? Not a fuckin’ chance.
*****
9:30PM, Time (And Liquor) Makes Fools Of Us All:
Duff stepped foot in the building all of two seconds ago and already Slash was latched onto his arm and dragging him to the bar.
“Stevie, Duff’s here!” The party officially started at nine, but Duff suspected that Slash may have gotten a head start on the bottle of whiskey clenched in his fist, if his uncharacteristically cheery demeanor was anything to go by.
“Pick your poison, buddy,” Steven invited with a knowing smirk.
“Uh, I don’t know, something with vodka…?” Duff was very preoccupied by the warm leather of Slash’s sleeve pressing against his side and the barest brush of his frizzy hair against Duff’s neck, but Steven sure got his attention when he slid an unopened bottle of Smirnoff across the bar.
*****
10:30PM, Santa’s Helpers Are Bringing Down The Neighborhood’s Property Value:
Every year, Axl and Izzy responded to their invitation with humming and hawing, as if they just might not be able to make it to the party this time, and every year (fashionably late, of course), Axl strutted into the bar like he owned it and Izzy slunk in behind him like a party crasher trying not to get caught.
Axl was more than ready to get his hands on a stiff drink, but the scene in front of him stopped him in his tracks: Slash and Duff, wearing an antler headband and an elf hat (respectively), equipped with window markers that Axl could only assume Steven had provided, were well on their way to turning the front window into a mural of lewd and filthy and sometimes festive doodles. When they finished, it would surely be a masterpiece to rival the Sistine Chapel, or maybe an issue of Hustler.
“Jesus Christ.”
It was only 10:30, did they really have to get such an early start on the shenanigans? Duff blushed red at Axl’s resigned exasperation, but it didn’t stop him from completing a crude drawing of a dick. The tiny bells on Slash’s headband jingled as he just laughed and added nipples to an (actually quite impressive) portrait of a shirtless woman. Fucking hell. At least they weren’t breaking anything… Yet.
*****
12:00PM, Good Fucking Luck Getting A Turn At The Karaoke Machine:
"Oh, Nikita, you will never know, never know anything about my home. I'll never know how good it feels to hold you... Nikita, I need you so."
As he sang the last words of the song, Axl spotted Izzy slipping away from the karaoke stage, ducking his head to hide the pink flush on his cheeks as he hurried back to the bar. Axl just smirked; Izzy always got embarrassed when Axl serenaded him in public, but he’d be back for more soon enough. Axl thought about following him, thought about getting Izzy even more flustered then dragging him to the restroom for a little fun like they did last year… But there’d be time for that later. For now, Axl wasn’t about to give up his reign as the undisputed Karaoke King.
Duff was sitting at the edge of a booth next to the karaoke machine, absentmindedly sucking on a cigarette and watching Axl pace the tiny stage like a caged animal ready to snap at anyone who tries to stick their hand through the bars, when Slash snuck up behind him with three beers balanced precariously in his hands.
“Watch this,” Slash stage whispered conspiringly as he handed one beer to Duff and then slid the second over to Axl. “Taking requests tonight, Ax?"
Axl sipped his drink and quirked his eyebrow at Slash. “Maybe."
“Well, Duff says he wants to hear some Nazareth."
“I said what?” Duff spluttered, narrowly avoiding choking on his beer, but Slash just elbowed him in the ribs.
“Shut up dude, it’s about to get good!"
Axl rolled his eyes at Slash’s bullshit but he jabbed a song into the karaoke machine and twisted the dial on the speaker.
“Gonna need some volume on this one…"
As the intro to a familiar song started to play, Slash wrapped an arm around Duff’s shoulders in apology. Duff leaned into the touch, and any remaining indignation he might have felt vanished as soon as Axl opened his mouth and started to scream.
“You’re a heart-breaking soul shaker, I’ve been told about you…"
“Shit, Axl can fuckin’ sing!” Duff whisper-shouted into Slash’s hair. Slash laughed, a sound that Duff had been graced with more times in this one night than all the rest of their acquaintance. He leaned up to put his lips by Duff’s ear.
“I dare you to request All I Want For Christmas Is You next!"
*****
1:00PM, O Tannenbaum:
“Hey, what are you guys doing to my – OH. Oh my god!”
A patch of branches on Steven’s Christmas tree was stripped bare of it’s dressings, but Steven couldn’t bring himself to stay angry about the vandalism when he saw how the decorations had been repurposed.
Slash sat cross-legged in front of the tree, very patiently doing his best to keep any drunken swaying to a minimum as Duff carefully wound a popcorn garland around his shoulders like a feather boa. Slash’s hair was sprinkled in gold tinsel, a pair of glass baubles dangled from his hoop earrings, and at least a half dozen more glass and paper ornaments were lovingly nestled in his voluminous curls.
Steven sprinted for the camera.
*****
3:00AM, Come Here Often?:
Slash couldn’t actually remember where he and Duff were trying to get, but it was clear that Duff was having a hard time getting there without swaying and stumbling. Duff was leaning heavily on Slash’s shoulder to stay upright – even though Slash wasn’t doing much better himself.
“Oof!” Duff tripped on something (likely as not his own feet) and tumbled to the side, where he was fortunate enough to land on a sticky leather couch instead of falling all the way to the floor. His arm was still wrapped around Slash’s shoulders, which meant that Slash was also yanked off his feet and dragged by the neck onto the couch where he landed gracelessly on top of Duff.
“Shit, sorry –“ Duff wheezed, sounding like he might have had the breath knocked out of him.
“Sfine, fine… You ok sweetheart?” Slash’s pet-name filter had disengaged completely a couple hours ago.
“Yeah, lemme just… hold on…”
Getting up from the couch seemed like too tall an order, but after some squirming and fumbling they managed a more comfortable position: Duff lay on his back with his knees hooked over the armrest and his hair splayed around his head like a wreath on the cracked seat cushion. Slash was draped on top of him, his forearms on either side of Duff’s head and his thigh conspicuously dipping between Duff’s legs.
Duff suddenly felt a lot more sober as he stared straight up at Slash’s dark eyes. Slash’s hair fell like a curtain around their faces, and the slivers of light that pierced the veil left a gleam in Slash’s eyes that Duff couldn’t quite read. He was nervous as hell, but for once he relished the feeling, that intoxicating cocktail of terror, anticipation, and arousal.
“Duff?” Slash’s fingertips wove into Duff’s hair, the gentlest touch but still enough to hold Duff’s head in place, not that he ever wanted to move.
“Yeah?” Duff was surprised by the thickness of the want in his voice, a low, heavy tone that resonated in the small space between them.
One moment Duff could feel Slash’s warm breath on his cheeks, the next he could feel his hot lips, then his tongue when Duff’s mouth fell open, in surprise or invitation he didn’t know or care.
Duff couldn’t say how long they lay tangled together, Slash’s body pinning him down, his hands buried in Slash’s curls, gasping for air when Slash finally broke their heated first kiss. They each caught their breath and stared at each other’s wet lips, neither sure what to say except:
“Again."
❄️❄️❄️
Steven has a secret box with a secret compartment full of embarrassing pictures of his friends at the Christmas party!
Axl’s karaoke songs are Nikita by Elton John, Hair Of The Dog by Nazareth (also on The Spaghetti Incident) and All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey.
Also, I’d like to formally request a drawing of Slash with ornaments in his hair. (Edit: here!!)

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2019 FAQ
Here's a quick re-post of the tips & FAQ we sent out for the event -- check it out! Lots of info on stuff about parking, free comics, and all that good stuff! :) PARKING, FREE COMIC & LINE ETIQUETTE NOTES Okay, Third Eye Faithful, you know us: our number one concern is that every single one of you guys is having an awesome time! Due to how big our FCBD event is, we do have a few favors we'd like to ask of you guys, as well as a heads-up on a couple of things. I know this email has a ton of info, but if you read anything, please read this. :) PARKING We have a TON of open, free parking in our building's lot, but -- it can and will fill up fast with the amount of folks FCBD can bring. Please, do us a favor: DO park in the rear lot of the store if spaces are available BEFORE parking in the rest of the lot, there's a ton of open spaces in the back, and these are the best spots to use if you're getting here early to camp out the night prior. DO carpool if you have friends / family going. The more folks you can condense into one vehicle the better. DO park off-site somewhere near-by if our lot is full. On weekends, there's a TON of open street parking within a minute or two's walk of our store. There's also a couple of walkable parking garages near-by. DO use our overflow parking at AIRECO, which is a 3 minute walk down the street from our store, and will have a THIRD EYE EVENT PARKING sign up. DO park off-site especially if you are hanging around the shop for the day, cosplaying, etc. DON'T park in front of the cone'd off spaces for our neighbors. There's only a few spots we have to cone off for them, but we want to make sure we don't take up all their spots! RESTROOMS -- provided by Third Eye! :) We'll have two portapotties set up for you, Third Eye Faithful, so that while you're waiting in line you have a quick and accessible option for restrooms! LINE ETIQUETTE Third Eye Faithful: we love to bring you all together as a community, and I swear, all of you guys and gals are the coolest people in the world. We never have issues with people being uncool in line, but we just wanted to take a second to remind you guys of some good line etiquette: You can begin lining up after 6PM on Friday night. Our door prize drawings don't begin until after 7PM on Friday night. When you arrive to line-up, you'll be given a numbered token. Our staff will be periodically checking for new line attendees throughout the day and evening on Friday. We will be giving out tokens until 10:00PM Friday night, and then resume (if the giveaways aren't already maxed out at the 100 mark) the next morning at 7:30AM. Once in line, PLEASE only leave the line to use the restroom, or grab food. Please make sure to let your line mates know, and please try not to be out of the line too long. It gets really difficult keeping things organized if everyone is not there. Just please: do not lose your token! :) Please try to stay in the vicinity of the store - while we cannot be there all night to police this, we count on you to help us keep the line orderly and fun. FREE swag will be given out once we hit our target #s (i.e first 50 in line for t-shirt, first 100 for prize bags, etc.) -- this means we need you guys to try to stay in an orderly line as much as possible to get your swag! Do NOT lose your tokens; you must have your token to give to us to get your swag. Please: bring tents, board games, grills, whatever -- but make sure that you are in a neat line, so you don't lose your spot! Please do not bring alcohol (even if it's in your tent, and we don't know about it!) -- we gotta keep FCBD an all-ages thing, Third Eye Faithful! :) TENTS are welcome, but please avoid anything so large that it blocks the flow of traffic. We don't have hard guidelines about how big is too big - but if it's the size of a mid-sized vehicle -- that may make traffic flow in the parking lot a bit difficult. :) Also, we're pretty darn awesome at Third Eye, but not super-human, our staff needs some sleep the night before such a big day. :) We'll be having everyone pack up their tents and whatnot around 6:00AM, so if you could set an alarm to be up and packing up then - that would be awesome. The tents tend to take up a lot of parking lot space, and the sooner we can get them up - the happier our neighbors typically are due to truck deliveries, etc. We really, really cannot stress enough how important it is to make sure we have everyone packed up and good to go before 7AM so we can properly manage the line. So, please be cool to each other in line, and make sure there's no line-jumping going on, and that you guys are taking care of each other. This is your community, and we count on you to keep it awesome. At 8AM Saturday, we will be splitting the line, so that those of you who are here for the creators first, will be taken to that area, while those of you who want to hit the free comics are in that line. Please note: the creators do not begin signing until 11AM, so you may not want to wait in that line until after you've gotten your free comics!
Most importantly: be cool to each other. We're all here to have fun!
LINES WILL BE MOVING FAST One thing we've gotten good at is moving through lines quickly and smoothly, and that's one thing that you can count on for FCBD. There'll be a lot of people, but after getting plenty of practice doing this in the past, we've gotten pretty good at this. :)
We will have multiple cashiers open, with more than just the four normal checkout lines. For Third Eye Cards, we will be writing out a voucher for you to bring in redeem at a later date, so that the check-out process is quick and efficient.
FREE COMIC ETIQUETTE! Our goal is to make sure you get the free comics you're most excited about, and to do that, we're going to be counting on you, Third Eye Faithful! :)
Please do not take more than 1 each of the free comics. Please ONLY take the free comics you are genuinely excited about - so that everyone is able to get their favorites. We do not enforce limits on how many free comics folks can take, because you are all super awesome and super kind about making sure that you scoop the comics you genuinely want, and not just a big stack of everything, without any thought into what is what. :)
With that being said, please review our list of FREE COMICS here and have an idea of the free comics you'd like to grab. While we can't guarantee they'll all be in stock, it does help move the line for free comics along quicker, instead of waiting to pick and choose once you hit the table.
And, don't forget: you can always come back for more free comics after you get done doing all your fun FCBD stuff! We do receive a lot of requests each year to hold free comics, and unfortunately, we cannot hold free comics. :( We're sorry about this, but we promise: FCBD is about so much more than the free comics; it's about the experience itself, and coming out for the event is totally worth it!

March 6th, 2019 - Port Surgery

March 6th, 2019 - God has such perfect timing. On Ash Wednesday, I went to the hospital to have surgery for my port-a-cath placement. (A port-a-cath is a device placed under the skin on the left side of the chest. It is attached to a catheter that is threaded into a large vein - thanks Google) This is an ingenious invention that takes away the process of finding a good vein to inject medications through, so you get pricked less and when you do get pricked it always works. I hope whoever thought of this is enjoying a wonderful life because as I’m writing this (on April 3rd) I have been in treatment for a month and I have needed to use the port dozen times already. It’s where they draw my blood for labs to check my blood count and other special tests, and it is what they use to introduce the chemotherapies as well as the targeted immunotherapies.
One thing about me is that I love water and one of the things you are NOT allowed to do before surgery is drink water up to 12 hours beforehand. My surgery was scheduled at noon which meant my being up for 4 hours and NOT being able to drink anything so naturally, the night before at 11:59PM I downed my entire 22oz water bottle.
The next day my brother, John,, brought my sister, Jenny, and I to the hospital at 8:30am. The check-in was fairly quick and I was brought to the back for labs/bloodwork and went to my room where 5-6 people told me “I’m going to ask you the same 20 questions that a handful of people are going to ask you right after I leave.” I appreciated that cause it was repetitive, but it was fine because everyone was so incredibly nice and friendly. By 10:00am they brought my siblings back to sit in the room with me while we waited for my surgery time of 12:30PM.
Right before surgery, Jenny was able to lead us in prayer and that helped to calm me. Then they wheeled me down the hall, then sedated me and I honestly was only awake in the room for maybe... 1 minute before I was out. Prior to surgery, the doctor had said it would be a 30-45 minute procedure and I would stay for maybe an hour more to wear off the anesthesia. When I woke up, I was in the recovery room; apparently, it took a little over an hour and post-procedure I slept for another 1 1/2 hours to work through the anesthesia. Around 3:00pm they brought me to a visiting area where my siblings were able to join me and it took another hour of resting, taking some medications, and eating some water and crackers before they let me go.
When I got home I was able to take a nap before we went to Mass for Ash Wednesday, which was great, and I felt like it was so fitting that I would get my port in which would mark the real start of my treatment on the first day of this penitential season. Now I knew my treatment was going to last until mid-July, well past the Lenten and Easter seasons but I prayed that this Lent would be fruitful, for myself, my family and all those whom God has brought into my life, especially the intentions that people have shared with me and those He places on my heart. I feel God has been so intentional with the timing of events and how He has prepared me to accept this and walk with Him. So incredibly grateful for the gift of faith that He has given me and how He continues to make Himself so present to me throughout this journey. One of the ways in which He does this so poignantly is through all of your constant love and support. Thank you all for your generosity and kind messages, it is always so touching to hear from you. Please know I am praying for you all :) Have a blessed Lent!

Tim Lindsay, Chairman, D&AD: “Advertising in Europe after the coronavirus pandemic” (August 26, 4:30pm – 5pm KST) How should advertising change, post-pandemic? One instinct that most of us have is that it would be wrong to simply revert to our old way of living – particularly in the developed world – when and if we're able to. The climate emergency makes that an imperative. How can advertising contribute to a more thoughtful, responsible and sustainable way of helping our clients do business? What are our responsibilities?
Guan Hin Tay, Chief Creative Officer, BBDO Singapore: “Imperfect Beauty: Brands Need Imperfect Human Stories That Are Authentic, Making Them Worthy of Consumer's Attention and Trust”” (August 26, 5pm – 5:30pm KST) Should stories always attempt to be perfect? Of course, stories without context or purpose are meaningless. But, on the other hand, stories mustn't shy away from the ugly truth. What if some content is meant to be ugly for a reason?
Josy Paul, Chairman, BBDO India: “The Rising Power of Emotional Data” (August 27, 1:30 – 2pm) This presentation is all about understanding the hidden power of emotional data: data that is rooted in human confessions, not just insights; data that goes to the 'the ocean floor of ourselves'. When we uncover it, society responds and the brand prospers.

Celebrating New Beginnings - Again
Today, January 12th 2018 is an important day!
Today marks 3 months since my last Taxol treatment! Three months of chemotherapy plus exactly 3 months without the drug leaves me in a different place. This means that the Taxol drug should be fully out of my system and that all those nasty symptoms associated with Taxol (hair loss, mouth sores, neuropathy, fatigue, nausea, etc.) should be out the window. And if anyone has seen me lately...my hair growth is a definite sign of this change.
Today I also completed my 6 month follow-up appointment and mammogram with my breast surgeon Dr. C. As she felt my swollen and bruised breasts, she explained that there is a 1 percent chance for me to have a recurrence of Breast Cancer and that is due to any potential leftover cells that are lining my breast. Dr. C. also explained that I would feel a lump on my skin rather than under my implant...that there is nothing there so cancer would never grow behind the implant. She commented on how even I looked and we chatted about nipple reconstruction (that which I am uninterested in). I will have another physical mammogram in 6 months (July) before being seen annually. I left the office feeling proud of how far I had come...some of this is really behind me now.
Not only is today a milestone, but I have encountered many milestones since my last post during Thanksgiving. In the last 6 weeks or so I have had two Herceptin infusions, a consult with the newest member of my team, Dr.H - my Cardiologist, and plastic surgery! Oh...and not to mention my Birthday!

Above is a wonderful selfie of me during Herceptin infusion on 12.14.17

The above and below photos represent Herceptin infusion on 1.3.18 - A day early due to snow “bomb cyclone” where the snow drifted up to the fence line in the backyard.

Then on January 5th, I dug out of my driveway to travel into the city for a meeting with a cardiologist. My understanding and takeaways from the consult with Dr. H is:
-He thinks the change in valve function is somehow related to the Herceptin (although it is not impacting the squeeze of the heart - which is what Herceptin normally affects)
-He can't say whether the heart or drugs, etc. is causing the fatigue
-He said he is NOT worried about the leakage but he is going to monitor me closely
-He gave the OK for surgery and moderate exercise (no real running)
-He indicated that I can continue with the Herceptin treatment right now as prescribed
-I will have a different kind of echo in 6 weeks to look at left ventricular strain instead of just squeeze
-No need for a stress echo now
-If there is an issue based on further data- could potentially use medication So...with all that being said...I think I am going to live...And I am...still...living.

Then came my Birthday....My day was full - Dim Sum, a movie at a local joint (plus Extreme Sour Patch Kids candy), soup and grilled cheese for dinner, and delicious mini cheesecake and fruit tart from Russos to end the day.

And at Dim Sum I got this fortune “The star of riches is shinning upon you” which was a great way to start of my 33rd year.

The very next day Jordan and I were up and at ‘em at 5:00, showered with the special anti-bacterial soap, and made it to the hospital at 6:00am. At 7:30am I was headed into pre-op for the second half of my reconstructive surgery with Dr. F.
This picture was taken right after I changed into my gown before all the REAL stuff happened. Jordan stayed with me, tossing my lavender ball back and forth, until I needed to do all the prep work (IV, blood thinner shot, health care proxy, Tylenol, etc). Then as quickly as I came in I was wheeled down the hallway to Operating Room #5. I remember consciously smiling to doctors and patients alike as I rolled down the corridor in style. I remember being assisted onto what seemed like a thin table and I thought I heard someone say, “here is some oxygen...let’s go someplace nice.”
The next thing I remember is that I am dreaming and then I am suddenly awakened from my dream too soon. I awoke on the table in the operating room. I saw the multiple big lights in my face and saw an outline of a doctor a few feet away getting something. I heard the anesthesiologist say, “she is waking up” and heard Dr. F explain that he just wanted to finish up a few things. And then all I remember is movement and waking up as they fit the bed into post-op position. Pretty freaky huh? I wish I had a cooler end to that story but it is still neat.
Before I left post-op to go home, the anesthesiologist stopped by and asked me if I remembered anything like waking up in operating room. I told him the story mentioned above and then I asked how long I was awake. The anesthesiologist confirmed that I had woken up at the end (after he had taken the breathing tube out) but before my plastic surgeon properly applied the steri-strips, nitro-something-or-other, and surgical bra. He said I was awake on the table for about 10 minutes...it only felt like a minute to me.
Since surgery on Monday, I have been home recuperating. In the picture below you can see some of the iodine and black markings.

Now let me just clarify a few things. First, this surgery was drastically easier than the bi-lateral mastectomy. This makes sense, right? I mean the amputation had occurred in first go around....this time we were looking more at replacement.
Second, the reconstructive surgery wasn’t quite as simple as I originally thought, but comparatively speaking it was. This became apparent when Dr. F started to draw all over my chest with his trusty black marker (which 4 days, 3 showers, and numerous alcohol swaps later is still so ever present). Dr. F began making several lines above my initial scars, in the middle of my chest, and where I had extra skin. I understood that he had to extend my scar to get rid of the extra skin but did not comprehend the other marks. He explained that essentially in order to look more natural he not only had to position the implants correctly, fix the excess skin, but also work with the muscle so that it didn’t look like I was flat and then a bulging round implant and then flat again. There needed to be a more gradual line.
....I think he was successful.

And before Jordan left on Wednesday morning, we celebrated my new breasts by finally eating these chocolate boobies I bought shortly after I was diagnosed. Although my new boobs don’t currently have nipples like the chocolate ones, we just don’t know what the future has in store for “the gals” down the road.
I end this post without exploring/discussing some of the other emotions I am experiencing with this change...such as loss....Instead I choose in this moment to leave you with this quote, “The road doesn’t go where you planned. It goes where it’s written to be.” - Yasmin Mogahed

METEORA TRAVEL GUIDE: Itinerary, Budget, Things to Do 2018
The first hermits arrived in hopes of finding seclusion and spiritual peace. Centuries later, it is still easy to see why, of all places, it is here that they chose to dwell. Even amid the the busyness of tourists like us swarming around the monasteries and gawking at the surrounding landscape, Meteora remains as serene as slumber and as solemn as a prayer.
It’s not difficult at all to be captivated by Meteora. I had my first glimpse of it through a viral Facebook video that features the monasteries perched atop lofty rocky pillars. At that moment, I knew I had to set foot in it and see it for myself. There’s this old saying immortalized in memes: If you want something badly enough, the universe will make conspire to make it happen. I’m not one to rely on the wisdom from memes, but it turned out to be true in this case. I didn’t think I’d be able to visit Meteora this soon, but a series of fortunate events led me to this.
WHAT’S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?
The name “meteora” means “high up in the air,” referring to the towering pillars that make up this rock formation, overlooking the plains of Thessaly in Greece. Since the first hermits took shelter in its caves, these sandstone columns have seen 24 Eastern Orthodox monasteries, making it one of the faith’s most important sites, second only to Mt. Athos. Because the monasteries were built on the summit of these rocks, they offer complete isolation. For most of its history, the only way to reach them were by long ladders, ropes, and nets.
Today, only six of these monasteries remain standing. Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, Meteora has been drawing tourists from all around the world for its historical, cultural, and geological significance as well as breathtaking scenery.
Here’s more info about Meteora.
Language: Greek. However, English is widely spoken.
Currency: Euro (EUR, €). €1 = 1.14 USD, SGD 1.6, PHP 61 (as of October 2018)
Modes of Payment: Cash is still the most common.
Electricity Info: 230 V, 50 Hz. Power sockets are Type F, which also accept Type C plugs.
April to June and November, when the weather is comfortable and the crowd isn’t that big.
July to October is high season, so rates in Greece in general are higher and the site is overrun by tourists. July and August are the driest and the hottest months.
December to March is winter. It’s not just the coldest, it’s also the wettest period. It doesn’t mean though that it rains every day. We visited in December, but it didn’t rain at all, not even a slight drizzle. Maybe we just got lucky. One important thing to note when traveling in winter is that there is no public bus service to Meteora from Kalambaka or Kastraki, which limits your transportation options significantly.
There are two towns lying at the foot of the Meteora cliffs: Kalambaka and Kastraki. To get to Meteora, you need to find your way to any of these.
Most independent travelers and backpackers prefer to stay in Kalambaka, which offers more lodging, dining, and tour options than Kastraki. In Greek, the official name of the town is Kalabaka, but it is also often called Kalambaka or Kalampaka. Don’t be confused. They all refer to the same town.
Here are some of the top-rated hotels in Kalambaka and Trikala, as scored by Traveloka and Tripadvisor users.

The nearest airport is Nea Aghialos National Airport (aka Volos Central Greece Airport or Volos Nea Anchialos Airport), located in Central Greece, south of Thessaly.
But most tourists come from Athens. If you’re coming from Manila or Singapore, the most cost-efficient way to reach Athens is to fly with Scoot. Scoot fares to Athens start at PHP10,403 from Cebu, PHP10,704 from Clark, PHP11,198 from Kalibo and PHP10,754 from Manila. These can still go lower when there is a promo. Look:
Actual fares we found for March
All flights from the Philippines will have a layover in Singapore. You can take this opportunity to also tour SG while you’re at it. From SG, the travel time to Athens is 11 hours and 10 minutes. Scoot uses a new Boeing 787 Dreamliner, so you can expect the cabin to be spanking clean and well-maintained.
If you want to score ATHENS PROMO FARES, keep a lookout for Scoot’s monthly Take-off Tuesday promotions, which happens every first Tuesday-Thursday of every month, available on their official website!
Athens to Meteora by Train
It’s easy to reach Meteora by train. Kalambaka has its own train station and is connected to Larissa Train Station, which is the central railway station in Athens.
Take the Metro Red Line to Larissa Station. If you’re coming from Syntagma, it should be easy because Syntagma is also along Red Line, just four stations away. Fare: €1.40. If you’re coming from Athens Airport, you must first take the Blue Line to Syntagma Station and then transfer to Red Line to Larissa Station. Fare: €10.
At Larissa Station, board the train to Kalambaka. There is only one direct train per day, scheduled to leave Athens at 08:20am and arrive in Kalambaka at 01:18pm. Fare: €18.3 – €25.6. If that’s not an option for you, you may travel to Paleofarsalos first then switch to another train bound for Kalampaka. See the schedule below.
Alight at Kalambaka Station. This is the last stop.
From Kalambaka Station, take the bus to Meteora. From March to November, there’s a bus leaving Kalambaka at 9am, 12 noon, and 3pm. Fare: €1.80 one-way, €3.30 round trip. No public buses in winter. You can either take a cab instead or just hike, which is great and very scenic.
For the train timetable, visit: Athens-Kalambaka Train Schedule.
Athens to Meteora by Bus
There are no buses that go directly to Meteora or Kalambaka. Instead you will have to travel by bus to Trikala, the city closest to Meteora, and then transfer to another bus to Kalambaka.
Make your way to LIOSION 260 BUS STATION. This is the terminal where buses bound for Trikala are stationed. It’s at 260 LIOSION STREET. – If you’re coming from other parts of the city center, you may take the metro. The nearest Metro Station is Kato Patisssia Station, which is 900 meters away. If you take the metro, make sure you have enough time allowance for walking. You can also just take a cab. – If you’re coming from the airport, board City Bus X-93 and alight at Liosion Street Bus Station. Travel time: 55 minutes.
Take the bus bound for Trikala or Kalambaka. A bus leaves at 7:00am, 10:30am, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 6pm, and 9pm daily. An extra 5pm trip is added every Friday and Sunday. Travel time: 5 hours.
In Trikala, transfer to another bus bound for Kalambaka. There’s one every hour. Travel time: 30 minutes to 1 hour. Total fare from Athens to Kalambaka is €31.50.
Monasteries Tour
Six ancient monasteries remain standing to this day, and they’re all open to visitors. From Kalambaka, you can take the bus to the monasteries. The bus will stop in all six monasteries. Here’s the bus schedule for March 16 to November 30, 2018. This may change in the coming years so make sure to call your hotel to confirm the schedule. No bus service in winter.
Fare: €1.80 one-way, €3.30 round trip.
As you can see, there are only a few buses per day, so you won’t be able to see all the monasteries if you’re relying on the bus. What most tourists do is they take the bus going up and then they just explore the place on foot, then they take the last bus back to Kalambaka. Ideally, you should be able to visit 2-3 monasteries in a day. Although it is possible to see more than 3 in a day, the pace may be too fast or stressful.
Note that these monasteries are not open all week. Each has its own closing day. We indicated the operating days and hours for summer 2018 and winter 2019 below. However, please note that these change every year and every season so double check with official sources before your trip.
Great Meteoron Monastery Summer hours: 9am-4pm (Closed: Tuesdays) Winter hours: 9am-3pm (Closed: Tue-Wed)
Varlaam Monastery Summer hours: 9am-4pm (Closed: Fridays) Winter hours: 9am-3pm (Closed: Tue & Fri)
St. Stephen’s Monastery Summer hours: 9am-1:30pm, 3:30pm-5:30pm Winter hours: 9:30am-1pm, 3pm-5pm Closed: Mondays
Roussanou Monastery Summer hours: 9am-5pm Winter hours: 9am-2pm Closed: Wednesdays
Holy Trinity Monastery Summer hours: 9am-5pm Winter hours: 9am-4pm Closed: Thursdays
St. Nikolaos Anapafsas Monastery Summer hours: 8am-4pm Winter hours: 9am-4pm Closed: Fridays
All monasteries above charge a €3 entrance fee. Kids 12 and below can enter for free.
These monasteries offer not just stunning views. They also house important historical artifacts. For example, the Great Meteoron Monastery also showcases the role of the Orthodox Church in key events in Greek history including World War II. St. Nikolaos Anapafsas Monastery displays frescoes created by Theophanes in 1527.
The Great Meteoron Monastery and the Varlaam Monastery are the biggest and the two most popular. St. Stephen’s Monastery and Roussanou Monastery are the easiest to access.
You can do it on your own, but because of the site’s immense historical importance, joining a guided tour will make your trip not just enjoyable but also enlightening.
Half-day tours usually cost €25 to €35.
Great Saint Scrambling Tour
The Great Saint Rock is one of the most iconic in Meteora. If you’re up for an adventure and you’re in great shape, this is right up your alley. This is a guided tour that will lead you to the tallest rock in the area, around 400 meters above the ground. There will be some climbing, abseiling, traversing, and lots of hiking, so be prepared physically and mentally.
You MUST have a guide to be able to do this because it’s a bit dangerous. Tours start at €60.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
Built in 7th century AD, this is one of the oldest churches in Greece. This Byzantine church is often overlooked by tourists even though it’s centuries older than the monasteries perched on the Meteora rocks. It has three aisles and features frescoes that can be traced back to as far as 14th century. Don’t miss the relics of an older Green temple can also be found inside.
If you’re staying in Kalambaka, you can easily make your way to this church.
Kastraki Village
Kastraki is one of the two villages at the foot of Meteora. Although Kalambaka harbors more hotels, restaurants, and tour agencies, Kastraki is quieter and more picturesque. Even if you’re staying in Kalambaka, Kastraki is worth a stop too. The village lies in between two colossal rocks, ensuring an unforgettable view from the base. The 19th-century houses along its streets are well-preserved, too!
Here’s a sample overnight Meteora itinerary. It assumes you’re arriving in Kalambaka before 2pm. We’ve indicated the entrance fees if you want to explore on your own as well as the usual tour rates if you want to join a guided tour.
DAY 1 – SUNSET TOUR
Arrival in Kalambaka
Hotel check-in
Meteora Sunset Tour: €30
St. Stephen Monastery. Entrance fee: €3

DAY 2 – MONASTERIES TOUR

Sightseeing Tour: €30

Varlaam Monastery: €3
Roussanou Monastery: €3

Departure
If you’re exploring Meteora DIY-style and on foot, Meteora is going to be one of the cheapest trips you’ll have in Greece. But if you’re joining guided tours, prepare to shell out around €100 for the tour fees, entrance fees, and gratuities.
Is Meteora safe?
When it comes to crimes, yes, Kalambaka and Meteora are very safe generally. But as in other places, follow the rules and don’t leave your things unattended.
If you’re not physically fit, don’t join some of the hiking tours, especially the Great Saint Scramble. It is a physically demanding activity.
Because of the rugged terrain and lofty cliffs, there’s always danger especially when it rains, so be extra careful. Don’t go too close to the edge. Wear shoes that have a good grip.
Should I explore Meteora on my own or should I join a guided tour?
It is possible to explore Meteora on your own. As mentioned, from mid-March/April to November, there are buses that can take you to the monasteries. It is also accessible if you just hike. However, having a guide will make you have a better understanding of the history and significance of the place. If you’re hiking, the trail isn’t always well marked, so a guide can be a great help.
What to wear inside the monasteries? Is there a dress code?
Knees and shoulders must be covered. Men need to wear long pants (trousers) that cover the knees. Women must wear skirts that cover the knees. There are wraps and long pants that can be borrowed by the entrance.
Are there restaurants near the monasteries?
None. No restaurants or cafes. There are small stalls selling snacks nearby, but that’s about it. It’s best to bring your own water and easy-to-eat food.
What is tipping policy in Kalambaka?
Tipping is NOT mandatory or expected in Santorini. You can just round up the bill. If your bill is €23.5, they usually just pay €25. But if you’re very happy with the service, 10% of the bill should be fine.
Do I need a visa to visit Greece?
Greece is part of the Schengen Agreement. For short visits, a Schengen Visa is required for most nationalities except for nationals of 62 specified countries which include Singapore, Malaysia, and the United States.
If you’re a Philippine passport holder, you will need a Schengen visa. We have a separate post discussing the visa application process in detail.
